Humira Monday's
Monday's have already won the title as "Crappiest Day of the Week" throughout most of the world, so I thought it would be equally fitting to add in a little something to spice it up and make it worse, Humira injections. A painful, burning injection to my thigh once a week. It sounds pleasurable, huh?
As of recently though, this once painful injection that I use to treat my Crohn's has actually turned my Monday's around and by Sunday, I am practically looking forward to 7 pm on Monday nights. Why? A few things;
- Abbvie, the company that produces the drug, has removed the ingredient (citric acid monohydrate) that made this injection feel like a hot lava slowly being injected into your skin. I am not joking when I say that. It has been to known to make grown men cry as well as myself. In fact, I used to give myself migraines on injection days because of the anxiety I would cause myself on Mondays in anticipation of the injection.
- This drug WORKS. For me. Which is the sweet spot in treating Crohn's and is vastly different for every individual. Most patients take a once bi-weekly injection but because of the severity of my disease, I take it once a week to keep the drug in my system longer.
- Mondays at 7 pm used to mean that my husband and I would put the baby to bed just in time for Beckham to not witness seeing his Momma in such a fragile state of crying and muttering "WTF" a few times before the injection had come to an end and ultimately yelling in pain. Ryan, is the only one I trust to give me them and he does a great job at it.
- The best part about the drug, is that I can truly tell how much better I feel when a new dose goes into my system. By Tuesday morning, I may finally have a solid bowel movement for the first time in a week. I will take it as small victory.
With the absence of the citric acid, I am hoping to keep my Humira injections on track and to continue to see improvement in the disease and learn to possibly love Monday's in other ways, like possibly removing the 8 hours in an office? Make everything sugar free and dairy free?
If any of you have tried the new Humira formulation, I would LOVE to hear your experience! It's been nothing short of wonderful on my end!
All my best,
Brooke
